The History Of Harley Davidson - Informational Harley Articles & More

BikerMatchmaking.com was launched in the spring of of 2002 and immediately established itself as the leading biker personal ad site for Harley Riders. Over the years BikerMatchmaking.com has continued to grow in popularity climbing to the top of all the major search engines for Harley Davidson type searches.

Here at BikerMatchmaking.com were excited as ever about the site and of course Harley Davidson motor cycles. In the weeks and months to come look for additional Harley Davidson articles to appear on the site as well as some great Harley images, screensavers and wallpapers and more.

The history of the Harley Davidson stretches back just over 100 years when this widely popular brand of motorcycle was developed as a way to improve on the 2-wheeled bicycle, one of the more popular modes of transportation of that time. The early twentieth century was a time of invention and it was the time that two young entrepreneurs, William Harley and Arthur Davidson teamed up and set about to improve the bicycle. In just a few years, with the help Arthur’s two brothers, Walter and William, the first three Harley Davidson motorcycles were born in 1903. And therein begins the history of Harley Davidson.Still very much resembling the bicycle, the only real visual difference was a uniquely-shaped frame that held an appropriately-sized combustion engine.

The real difference in this new invention wasn’t really noticeable until one sat down and realized that movement could occur without pedaling! Over the next few years, changes were made to the engine’s capacity and many more Harleys were produced. During those early years of the history of Harley Davidson, annual production had increased to just over 1,000. Purchased mostly by law enforcement divisions for their power and speed, inventors everywhere raced to build their own brands of motorized bicycle. In fact, after eight years of dominating this untapped market, consumers could now choose from about 150 different brands of motorcycle.

But even with all this competition, the history of Harley Davidson wouldn’t end anytime soon. While other manufacturers focused on the broader mass market, Harley Davidson continued to sell its motorcycles to law enforcement agencies, and soon to government agencies to help support the war effort during WWI. This was a smart move and it’s one that caused production to soar. After the war, Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company assumed the role of the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles.

From there, research and development surged full throttle and so did the motorcycle engine’s capacity and overall functionality. One of only two motorcycle manufacturers to stay alive during the depression, Harley Davidson soon thereafter created the front brake and the 61 inch cubic inch overhead valve engine. World War II brought new prosperity for Harley Davidson as orders for allied use soared to 90,000! The war ended but the need for speed didn’t and Harley Davidson’s marketing efforts focused on newly-returning veterans who just couldn’t get enough.

In 1953, at 50 years old, the history of Harley Davidson wasn’t ready to retire. In fact, a younger generation of Harleys and Davidsons breathed new life into the motorcycle manufacturer. Its reputation as an “outlaw” bike, complete with an easily recognizable “image” soared during this time. It was also a time in which fiberglass came into use. Sales continued to soar for the next couple of decades and even more so after 1980, when the bikes reverted back to their classic looks and were marketed towards the baby-boomers who were approaching mid-life and who had plenty of money to burn. Even young professionals wanted Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The history of Harley Davidson lives on and it’s this history that continues to propel it into the future.
